DSC_0905 copy.JPG Hi, I'm JJ

i believe that hard work and persistence in film-making, provides the opportunity to leave behind something greater than yourself.

i believe the most important thing in my life and the most important influence that i have in this world is not my ability to mess around with a camera, but it's about who i am as a person.

my passion is to tell stories that inspire others and i believe in the simple premise that storytelling changes the world.

my blog is like a journal where I post all of my recent work and create conversation around storytelling, so check back often and see what I've been up to.

[step forward day 2009] from JJ Starr on Vimeo.

each year, the Pepperdine community comes together for a day of service. Over 1400 students, faculty, staff and alumni gather to help over 50 non-profit organizations, schools, churches and parks that span from downtown Los Angeles to Ventura County. During this one day the Pepperdine community serves a collective 4200 hours (equivalent to 2 years of work for one person). For the volunteers, the tradition of Step Forward Day reflects a commitment that lasts beyond this single day of service. shot on a sony EX1 with a homemade pvc pipe dolly

life adagio from JJ Starr on Vimeo.

i hear all the time to follow my passions and pursue a "vocation" which i truly enjoy. the concept of this "pursuit", no longer seems far-fetched. maybe it's because of where i go to school or the amazing people that i surround myself with. but i often wonder how many of us are living from a place where the routine of everyday has become common-place to us? the "school system" seems to measure all of us based on how well we do compared to others, A, B, C, and so on, but i wonder how many us just need to room to create and step back from the "routine" that we have found ourselves immersed in and live from that place where we experience deep joy.

golden (rough cut) from JJ Starr on Vimeo.

we hear all the time that high school is the same as it was 20, 30, or 40 years ago; but is it really? I set out to answer this question and dive into what kids are facing on a regular basis. I sat down with over 30 kids and asked them simple, open-ended questions regarding life as a high school student. The students featured are between the ages of 14-18 and are a collaboration between two high schools, both located in middle to upper-middle class communities: Naperville, IL and Malibu, CA.

awaken honduras (teaser trailer) from JJ Starr on Vimeo.

in june 2008 a team from Los Angeles traveled to Honduras to capture the reality that children living there are faced with. we dealt mostly with kids living just outside of Tegucigalpa, the capital of Honduras. The kids featured are faced with working long hours in a trash dump collecting anything that they can find to make money. The conditions of the dump are very bad and kids are often injured and/or killed.
